Jon - A Husband's Perspective
"Home birth……A man’s perspective!!
From the outset I was dead against a homebirth, being my first child I was concerned that if any problems occurred during the birth we would be too far away from the hospital and it was quite a daunting prospect. But Vicky had her heart set on it and I knew I would never hear the end of it if we didn’t have a home birth.
So the day arrived, I got home around 6pm and Vicky said she thought things had started happening, so we gave Mandy a text to let her know the situation and were talked through the next couple of hours, by about 9pm it was clear that this baby wanted to come out, I text Mandy to say we were at 1 minute contractions 3 minutes apart and got a quick reply of “Excellent I’m on my way”. Within 20 minutes Mandy had arrived and instantly got to work not only on Vicky but her confident bubbly personality did wonders to make me feel confident and relaxed throughout the whole birth allowing me to concentrate on Vicky throughout the whole process and enjoy it. Vicky had a very difficult labour, Kensa was 10lb 4oz born back to back with only gas and air for pain relief, but 5 hours later we were rewarded with an amazing gift and the most special moment in my life the birth of our beautiful baby girl Kensa. We couldn’t have asked for a better midwife to help us through the birth, I remember looking up at Mandy several times during the birth as she was moving around the birthing pool and the most striking thing for me was the constant smile on her face and the obvious passion for work as a midwife.
So after all that do I think I’d have another homebirth? Well if we do have another one it will definitely be another home birth largely thanks to Mandy. My best friend and his partner are having a homebirth for their child due in October and I couldn’t be more excited for them.
A very proud, if a little emotional, Dad"
